The winning essays were chosen from a field of 144 entries from greater Sacramento area high school students that reacted to this year's prompt, "We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if mankind is to survive," by Albert Einstein. At this event, the 10 finalists read their essays. The authors of the top three essays earned $2,500, $1,500 and $1,000 scholarships, and the other seven each earned a $750 scholarship. Segment 2: "Live From Tent City: The Last 21 Days" (55.5 minutes) On April 1, 2009, Emmy award-winning filmmaker Costa Mantis moved into Sacramento’s “tent city” to live with homeless people there.
